East Tennessee attracts retirees! Maryville was featured in "Where to Retire", Winter 1997 issue, as one of the top ten best places to retire in the US. Quoting from that article, "Tucked in the foothills of eastern Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, Maryville's greatest asset is its enviable location. Far from busy interstate highways and crowded urban centers, modern-day worries are forgotten - at least temporarily - when one is greeted daily by panoramic vistas of rolling, velvety slopes. A slower pace, small liberal arts college and abundance of outdoor recreation further add to the appeal of this quiet town of 20,500."
Maryville is the seat and geographic center of Blount County, situated in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In addition to the facilities offered by the Park, Blount County residents can enjoy parks and recreation facilites operated by the Recreation and Parks Commission. Facilites include pools, fitness trails, athletic fields and tennis courts. The newly constructed Senior Citizens facility is a comprehensive center serving adults 60 years and older, where they can come and meet new friends and enjoy many activities, including dancing, ceramics, art and trips.
The area's cost of living, which is below the national average, and taxes that are among the lowest in the country are big incentives for retirees. Tennessee does not have a state income tax on earned income
Maryville is located just 15 miles south of Knoxville. With the recently completed Pellissippi Parkway linking Blount County with West Knoxville, it is a quick 20 minute drive. Chattanooga is 100 miles to the southwest, and Nashville is 194 miles west. McGhee Tyson Airport, only minutes from downtown Maryville, is served by four major carriers and six commuter airlines with more than 200 scheduled flights daily.
Blount Memorial Hospital is a 334-bed, acute-care facility with a trauma center equipped for most medical emergencies.
